2. The Passion of the Penguins leaves big issues alone and appeals |

to conservatives by ignoring science. The film avoids both global warming and evolution so is perfect for people who want to ignore the truth. It's more like a kiddie show.

3. I think the film directly contradicts the conservative way of life |
|
Do you all remember the part when winter came and the penguins had to huddle together for warmth? How about the fact that the penguins "took turns" standing on the inside where it was warm? How many conservatives do you know think it is right to "take turns"? The conservative viewpoint is "me first, everybody else second" I see Bush, Cheney, and the rest of the Republicans standing inside the circle saying "go Cheney yourself" to the other penguins who want to stand where it is warm. As usual, the conservatives can't even understand a simple concept like that.

5. I loved the movie; however, if that |

is a case for intelligent design, then, at least as far as the penguins are concerned, the "intelligent designer" must be Rube Goldberg. Hell, if I were the penquins, I'd be pretty pissed at that designer for making me schlepp back and forth from the water to the breeding ground, more times than a 15 year-old guy going in and out of a drug store before he buys his first condom.
I wonder if they use the movie to support "family values." - "Oh, look at all those penguins, so dedicated to each other and their little ones" while conveniently forgetting they soon bail on the kids and as far as monogamy, it's just an Antarctically long one-night stand. For some reason, I have an image of penguins smoking cigarettes telling each other they'll call next season.

They are at Central Park Zoo. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/02/07/MNG3N4RAV41.DTLNew York -- Roy and Silo, two chinstrap penguins at the Central Park Zoo in Manhattan, are completely devoted to each other. For nearly six years now, they have been inseparable. They exhibit what in penguin parlance is called "ecstatic behavior": That is, they entwine their necks, they vocalize to each other, they have sex. Silo and Roy are, to anthropomorphize a bit, gay penguins.
When offered female companionship, they have adamantly refused it. And the females aren't interested in them, either.
At one time, the two seemed so desperate to incubate an egg together that they put a rock in their nest and sat on it, keeping it warm in the folds of their abdomens, said their chief keeper, Rob Gramzay. Finally, he gave them a fertile egg that needed care to hatch. Things went perfectly, and a chick, Tango, was born.
For the next 2 1/2 months they raised Tango, keeping her warm and feeding her food from their beaks until she could go out into the world on her own. Gramzay is full of praise. "They did a great job," he said.

8. Conservatives like serial monogamy now. Who knew. |
|
The penguins don't partner for life. There is lots of potential baby mama drama in penguin land, but then penguins aren't thinking about all that. Why should we?
It was a beautiful movie and I took away major messages about cooperation and shared responsibility. Both parents are deeply involved in the survival of the next generation. The male penguins shifted places in the huddle so that they all had a chance to keep warm and survive. That's what was beautiful to me, and that's not conservative at all. In fact, its downright socialist.
