New Yorker: "HIGH Stakes: Jane Mayer on Trent Lott's bad bet"
Just in case you were wondering whether Helmet Hair is anything other than a slimy bottom-feeding scumbag... here's how he's complicit in the Katrina deaths in Mississippi. It's about money and power--oh, and corruption, of course.

:grr:

Among the blown-off rooftops, upended pine trees, and other detritus that Katrina scattered along the Gulf Coast were a good number of twisted and bashed-in slot machines. The storm had hurled them ashore as it ripped casino barges from their moorings in Biloxi, Gulfport, and Bay St. Louis.

Carol Browner was the head of the Environmental Protection Agency during the Clinton Administration, when many casinos in Mississippi were constructed. Last week, speaking from her office at the Washington consulting firm where she now works, she recalled the difficulties that her department experienced years ago when they tried to persuade legislators, including Mississippi Senator Trent Lott, that building on wetlands was environmentally risky.

1. trent lott and wetlands
so maybe the possibility of him leaving the senate will become reality! if this is brought out in a real investigation, he may have to be subpoenaed and answer questions under oath.

2. they all have so many terrible things known
about them that it seems futile to get excited that any of them might be thrown in jail for their actions. BTW, welcome to DU, DazzleRazzle

3. Thank you for the post, Hand
Carol Browner, someone I truly admire, also testified as a witness in today's confirmation hearing on John Roberts. She discussed the Commerce Clause and environmental statutes such as the Clean Water Act, including wetlands.

The implication being...Roberts seems to lean toward restriction of federal environmental laws.

4. This article might be relevant except...
The casinos were built on areas that were already developed with perhaps the exception of Casino Magic in Bay St. Louis. The other sites were on the beach and had existing structures on them. Well, except for Boomtown Casino and Imperial Palace, which were located on Biloxi Back Bay, not on the beach, but still previously developed.
