Ex-judge & spy chief condemns war role
Ex-judge condemns war role

A FORMER Federal Court judge and spy chief says the invasion of Iraq has left the country in tatters, with no positive end in sight.

Sir Edward Woodward, a former barrister, judge and head of spy agency ASIO, says in his new memoir that Australia was wrong to take part in the US-led coalition of the willing.
Sir Edward writes in his book, One Brief Interval, to be published next month, Prime Minister John Howard had led Australia into the war based on short-term interests.

"It has now become clear, as I had feared, that no proper thought was given by the Bush administration to what would happen after the `shock and awe' of battle," Sir Edward writes.

"The president's triumphal announcement of `Mission Accomplished' rings very hollow, with no end in sight and the overall situation steadily deteriorating.
