Picking a judge by faith
While the cleanup continues in New Orleans, record numbers died this week in Iraq, and while the rest of the country gets back to school and NFL football, Washington has been consumed with the charade called the John Roberts confirmation hearings for chief justice of the Supreme Court.

Roberts is the perfect blue-eyed, sharp-witted candidate. A master of the non-answer and the snappy comeback. It's suggested we should take him on faith

The Bush administration is big on faith, from aid to the poor funneled through churches, to outright giveaways to churches that deny the female half of the population equal treatment. Now the Republicans in the Senate are taking up the call. Roberts doesn't have to answer whether he thinks women have a basic right to privacy. If he believes they don't, he'll surely vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision legalizing abortion.

There are a couple of other little things embodied in the right to privacy too, like birth control and whether families have the right to let a forever comatose loved one go quietly and with dignity. Roberts has said he supports birth control - for married people. We'll just have to guess how the next Terri Schiavo debacle will play out under a Roberts court. <snip>
