GEORGE W Bush has little to be proud about over his handling of the hurricane disasters, but he has one consolation. Last year he pledged to heal the wound of his election campaign which split America. Now both sides are uniting: against him.

Every attempt the President makes to show command over hurricane Rita, only serves as a reminder of what he should have done during hurricane Katrina. But now the criticism is coming from the right as much as the left.

Bush's answer to Katrina - to write an almighty cheque and slap the bill on the national deficit - has prompted a small revolt from Republicans in Congress. The man last year hailed as the hero of the right is fast becoming an embarrassment to conservatism.

In New York, from where these words are written, the small but dedicated band of Republicans in the city are in despair. After backing Bush to the hilt in the presidential election, they have found the warnings of their Democrat-supporting rivals coming true.
