... Bob Woodward provides first-person insight into history

By Howard Greninger/Tribune-Star

W. Mark Felt, who revealed himself as the "Deep Throat" in the events surrounding the Watergate break-in, had personal reasons for speaking out, but above all voted "yes" about the U.S. Constitution and freedom of the press, said investigative reporter, author and editor Bob Woodward.

"The First Amendment is not an accident," Woodward said Tuesday during a speech at Hulman Center at Indiana State University. "My deeply held conviction, supported with a lot of evidence, is what might do this country in to where we cease to exist as a vital democracy, as a Constitutional democracy, is not terrorism or a weak economy -- but what will do us in is a secret government."

... As if testing the audience, Woodward began his speech by asking people to raise their hands if they voted for President Bush. Then those who voted for the Democrat candidate, Sen. John Kerry. Most in attendance rose hands for Kerry. It was nearly 9 to 1 against the president's tax cut policies and 8 to 1 that the war on Iraq was not necessary.

"I just wanted to see how many rich, war-mongering Republicans there are here," Woodward said.

2. Bob Woodward can kiss my grits.
His paper, the 'Washington Post' has been in the forefront of destroying this democracy. How comfortable for Woodward to live in the past.
