Meltdown in progress
You know a regime is in trouble when its leader is grudgingly forced to make repeated penance trips to the site of a national catastrophe, while his party’s congressional foot soldiers conduct a “show trial” to shift the blame.
Make no mistake: The Bush administration is in trouble. Even Karl Rove can’t fool all of the people all of the time. And it’s not just Katrina, it’s cumulative. The war in Iraq, Halliburton, cultural backlash, schemes like privatizing Social Security and tax cuts for the wealthy, ignoring science while rolling back environmental protection, and breaking down the barrier between church and state.
Plus, now it’s also obvious that key government posts have gone to political cronies whose incompetence can be deadly.
Still, hanging former FEMA Director Michael Brown and a few others out to dry won’t change much. As business folks like to say, the tone is set at the top. As it turns out, the current administration, originally presented as experienced, professional, and full of “serious adults” prepared to keep us secure, is actually full of willful children incapable of planning ahead or admitting mistakes — and dangerously distracted at key moments. <snip>
