Muslim Chaplain Recalls Guantanamo Deal
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20051004/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/guantanamo_muslim_chaplain_1

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Army Capt. James Yee had just arrived at the U.S. prison for terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay when he got his first hint of trouble.

The man Yee would replace as Muslim chaplain showed him around the high-security base on the eastern edge of Cuba, and gave him a warning.

"This is not a friendly environment for Muslims, and I don't just mean for the prisoners," Yee recalled hearing from the outgoing chaplain. "You need to watch your back."

The new chaplain soon grew increasingly disturbed by the treatment of prisoners and what he perceived as military hostility to Muslim personnel at the base. Yee's biggest shock came later, when he was arrested on suspicion of espionage and held in solitary confinement for 76 days.

1. His story deserves widespread attention. He's publishing a book.
I hope it receives the marketing necessary to get broad attention.

2. If we had any journalists worth a damn, his story would be told.
Dan Rather might have been the one to tell it had it not been for his "swiftboating" by the RW.

3. Seattle Times had
lenghthy articles about Yee's plight. This certainly needs to be told again and again nation wide. Swiftboating is a good description of what happened in this disgraceful case.

4. Please recommend this post. This is a very important story--Capt. Yee
finally breaking his silence. Don't know if he's still under the gag order, but anything he has to say is news. This was a terrible injustice.

6. He has written a book - on sale this week.
From the article:

"What happened to me was a gross miscarriage of justice," he said Tuesday in a phone interview from New York, where he was promoting his book, "For God and Country," which went on sale this week. "I don't want what happened to me to ever happen to anyone else."

(end snip)

I am going out tomorrow to look for the book.

7. The Olympian isn't covering this
The newspaper right in Fort Lewis' backyard, the newspaper where so many people sounded as if they were trying to convict him before any trial was ever held. As of this writing, there are absolutely zero stories about the Yee book on The Olympian's website (and, presumably, in the print edition, although I can't verify that).

With what The Olympian did to Yee, I'd think Yee could own them after all this.
