What information is more vital to you and your family: A starlet gets into an accident and escaped unscathed, or news that a government agency is withholding life-saving information to appease Wall Street?

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported two days ago that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be withholding vital flu virus information in order to ensure profits for a select few pharmaceutical companies.

Amid growing concerns that avian influenza will develop into a deadly pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is under fire by some in the scientific community for hoarding data crucial for vaccine development. The allegations come as CDC has issued new and controversial rules on what data, documents and other information it will — and will not — share with the public. <snip>

One potential concern that the CDC may have about sharing data is how it would affect any partnership it might now have with vaccine manufacturers, said David Webster, president of Webster Consulting Group, a health industry consulting firm based in Pennsylvania. The CDC might be concerned that those manufacturers might not be able to recoup their investment if the information is made widely available, he said.

With the rumors of a global Bird Flu epidemic on the horizon, you'd think that allegations of the CDC withholding vital data, possibly at the behest of corporations, might be important for the American people to know? Thats f**king big news right?

So what was last night's lead story on most of the networks?

Linsay Lohan's car crash, in which no one died. According to news-reports, her two seater Mercedes convertible hit a Chevy Astro van. Thankfully, the airbags saved her life. (Those breast implants have certainly paid off for Ms. Lohan.)

I understand that the Los Angeles NBC affiliate, channel four, was able to get a helicopter on the scene within minutes.

Now I admit, she is fun to look at. :evilgrin: But was the movie Herbie: Fully Loaded so great that Ms. Lohan's accident couldn't have waited for the crew of Entertainment Tonight to cover? Am I so un-hip that I'm the only one who didn't know who Linsay Lohan was before last night? Wait... don't answer that.

As of the writing of this essay, no helicopter has been dispatched to cover the CDC.
