The Right, on Fire Over Miers - Colbert King
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/07/AR2005100701650.html

"But then conservative commentators and columnists -- bless their hard-wired hearts -- came down on Miers like tons of bricks in free fall. Thus I was visited with the following revelation: If Miers is capable of causing the right to weep, wail and gnash its teeth, she can't be all bad.

They certainly are showing her no mercy. Treatment once reserved for those of progressive political persuasions is being directed toward her. You know the kind of attention I mean: belittling her qualifications, putting down her accomplishments, ascribing values to her that are all out of proportion to known facts, deriding her as a crony and diversity's child -- an affirmative action baby, so to speak."

I don't usually find King this witty, but this is a good one.

2. The anger directed at Ms. Mier
is merely displaced disgust of a president who has lost his way.
The right is waking up from a long sleep and will soon have no one but their president to blame.

3. I dunno if I believe this shit.
The lockstep obedience-fetishized right has suddenly
become a "circular firing squad"? Nah. This is another
orchestrated media campaign.

4. I think they really expected...
that this was their chance to pick anyone they wanted, no matter how right-wing. They're frustrated that they're not able to have a trusted doctrinaire radical wingnut that they can ram past anyone's objections.

5. Maybe. We will see.
I thought that was Roberts, but he seems more in the
statist mode than someone who takes his religion seriously.

Ms Miers is certainly a questionable pick, on a number of
grounds, but I still feel this fuss is a bit overdone,
considering some of the other things the wingnuts have
swallowed whole from this administration. Of course this
could just be the straw that broke the camel's back, or it
could be a matter of fear about the coming elections and
a corresponding desire to get things done now.

I think it is worth considering that she is a stalking
horse, intended to fail, to make the acceptance of the
candidate that follows her more certain.
