National Review: Bush should dump Miers

WASHINGTON, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A leading conservative journal is calling for President Bush to withdraw his nomination of Harriet Miers to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In an editorial posted online Friday, the National Review listed a number of objections to the nomination -- concluding that there is "very little evidence that Harriet Miers is a judicial conservative, and there are some warnings that she is not."

The magazine -- which Bush recently feted at the White House to mark its 50th anniversary -- noted that Miers is reported to have been "a strong defender of racial preferences when they were being challenged before the Supreme Court," and said she has shown a tendency in her career to "identify with local elites and establishments, to go along with prevailing ideas, and to avoid doing anything that might cause unpleasantness or rock the boat."

The editorial said Miers was not enough like Justices Antonin Scalia or Clarence Thomas -- "the kind of justice this president led conservatives to expect." The National Review said it was concerned Miers might turn out to be more like the late Justice Harry Blackmun.

1. Blackmun is Code for Roe v. Wade
Blackmun delivered the opinion of the Court in Roe v. Wade.

2. ya know, they always compare miers to SUPREME COURT JUSTICES
will she be like scalia?
will she be like thomas?
or will she be like blackmun?
or will she be like souter?

the thing is, good or bad, all these people are or were supreme court justices.

truth is, IF she winds up on the supreme court, she'll wind up a lot more like babs from animal house in an ill-fitting robe. and when she hears anna nicole smith plead her case, all she'll have to say is, "that man is a p-i-g PIG!"

3. Actually, there's part of that analysis that I agree with.
My current impression of Harriett is that she kisses whatever asses she has to to get where whe wants to be. I think she is someone who doesn't want to make waves, so the majority on the court would be able to convince her to join them.

I would much prefer someone on the court who was much more knowledgeable of Constitutional law, but I'm also very afraid if Harriett goes away, Shrub will choose a real radical RW nutjob.
