Truthout: "It's Bush-Cheney, Not Rove-Libby"

Now that sure is music to these lil ole ears..he concludes that the real victims are not the Wilsons but rather the USA and Iraq

"It's Bush-Cheney, Not Rove-Libby
There hasn't been anything like it since Martha Stewart fended off questions about her stock-trading scandal by manically chopping cabbage on "The Early Show" on CBS. Last week the setting was "Today" on NBC, where the image of President Bush manically hammering nails at a Habitat for Humanity construction site on the Gulf Coast was juggled with the sight of him trying to duck Matt Lauer's questions about Karl Rove.

As with Ms. Stewart, Mr. Bush's paroxysm of panic was must-see TV. "The president was a blur of blinks, taps, jiggles, pivots and shifts," Dana Milbank wrote in The Washington Post. Asked repeatedly about Mr. Rove's serial appearances before a Washington grand jury, the jittery Mr. Bush, for once bereft of a script, improvised a passable impersonation of Norman Bates being quizzed by the detective in "Psycho." Like Norman and Ms. Stewart, he stonewalled.

That stonewall may start to crumble in a Washington courtroom this week or next. In a sense it already has. Now, as always, what matters most in this case is not whether Mr. Rove and Lewis Libby engaged in a petty conspiracy to seek revenge on a whistle-blower, Joseph Wilson, by unmasking his wife, Valerie, a covert C.I.A. officer. What makes Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation compelling, whatever its outcome, is its illumination of a conspiracy that was not at all petty: the one that took us on false premises into a reckless and wasteful war in Iraq. That conspiracy was instigated by Mr. Rove's boss, George W. Bush, and Mr. Libby's boss, Dick Cheney.

Mr. Wilson and his wife were trashed to protect that larger plot. Because the personnel in both stories overlap, the bits and pieces we've learned about the leak inquiry over the past two years have gradually helped fill in the über-narrative about the war. Last week was no exception. Deep in a Wall Street Journal account of Judy Miller's grand jury appearance was this crucial sentence: "Lawyers familiar with the investigation believe that at least part of the outcome likely hangs on the inner workings of what has been dubbed the White House Iraq Group.""

9. If this were a movie, I would probably go see it on the big screen
but waiting for a resolution to this long drama is excruciating. My vote is that the good guys win in the end.

Definitely a nailbiter!

5. The "larger plot" could have been planting fake WMDs.
Check out Peace Patriot's fantastic analysis of the Bush cabal's rushed over-reaction, "risking everything" to out Plame. They could have been afraid of David Kelley or someone else disclosing that they had a plot to plant fake WMDs in Iraq.

11. Well, the largest conspiracy would surely have been the group lying

to attempt to justify (and temporarily succeed, in the US) illegal invasion in the first place. And at the highest (I mean also international) level. That means also you Mr. Blair, Mr Straw, Mr Aznar, Mr. Berlusconi...;

Looks like there was some real actual profitable trafficking in WMD components that may well have been not too far removed from Bush-Cheney (Carlyle-Halliburton) (offshore) circles - Pakistani nuclear walmart;

Then, around the time of the apparent suiciding (still pending a proper inquest) of Dr. David Kelly and others, possible attempt(s) to plant false evdence (while a certain journalist, for example, was in the field with special 'secret' clearance from the 'highest (WH/Pentagon) authorities');

And certainly attempts to put the frighteners on others...(BBC certainly included);

Then, once "mission accomplished", the beginnings of the cover-up;

Then, the cover-up of the attempted cover-up;

Now...

And all the time a once-upon-a-time ostensibly respectable, long-serving NYT journalist appears to have enjoyed some very special relationships...

Shit. Would it be a crime to suggest, naming and/or otherwise identifying a person, who's name tends to bring to mind a great old Lennon/McCartney song called 'Hey Jude', that such a person may have acted as a clandestine 'operative' of a clandestine stovepiping conspiracy not a million miles removed from all this?

ed: without for one moment forgetting others such as for example you, Ms. Olivia Marriott Bosch.

7. yes, the stakes are about as high as they can possibly get
If indictements are handed to KKKarl the lid might well come off one huge can of worms. In that scenario all hell might subsequently break loose (sorry for mixing my metaphors).

There will be a trail that leads all the way up to the top of the tree because one question will lead to another and so on. The logical place for the questions to go can only be upwards.

No wonder * looked like a frightened rabbit.

10. Another strongly stated point by Rich:
"It is surely a joke of history that even as the White House sells this weekend's constitutional referendum as yet another "victory" for democracy in Iraq, we still don't know the whole story of how our own democracy was hijacked on the way to war."

13. I wonder who will be getting coal in their stocking for Fitzmas
this year, who's been naughty

It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Everywhere you go.
Who's gonna do five-or-ten?
We're thinking once again
Of handcuffs and of orange jumpsuits aglow.
It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Indictments on every score
But the prettiest sight to see
Is the scowl on Darth Cheney
At the slammer's front door.

A warrant or writ, a subpoena that fits
Is the wish of Barney and Ben;
The thought of Turdblossom hung up like a possum
Is the hope of Janice and Jen;
And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for court to start again.

It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Everywhere you go.
There's an defendant who doesn't want to tell;
One in the White House as well --
The felony kind that doesn't mind the law!
It's beginning to look a lot like Fitzmas
Soon the bells will start
And the thing that will make them ring
Is the indictment that we sing,
Right within our hearts!
