Mt. Diablo Keeps Name Despite Religious Objection

(AP) WALNUT CREEK Federal officials have rejected a request to change the name of Mount Diablo after receiving complaints that it was offensive to some religions.

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names voted unanimously this week to keep Mount Diablo's name the same, saying it "saw no compelling reason to change the name," said spokeswoman Jennifer Runyan.

The Portland, Ore.-based agency was responding to a complaint by Art Mijares, an Oakley man who wanted the name changed to reflect American Indian languages.

1. Excellent!
I grew up in the shadow of Mt. Diablo -- it will always be Mt. Diablo.

These religious nuts can go jump off the summit ...

2. I've climbed that mountain 3 times
And even if they changed the name, I would have defiantly continued to call it Mt. Diablo.

4. I know the feeling --
To my mind, there are a couple airports that will always be "Washington National" and "Houston Intercontinental"...

9. And citizens of Georgia still call Lake Thurmond Clark Hill Lake
South Carolina, at the urging of Thurmond (what modesty), renamed Clark Hill Lake ... or so they thought. Georgia still refers to the lake as Clark Hill Lake in their state maps and state parks brochures. Bravo for Georgia!

7. Somewhere warmer all right.
My grandmother used to say that the reason Scotsmen wore kilts was to hide the devil between their legs. ;-)
