Jay Bookman: GOP politics as usual unacceptable

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, Fox host Sean Hannity and other conservatives are complaining bitterly about what they call the "criminalization of politics."

I agree, it's a problem. In fact, the sooner we run the criminals out of politics, the better.

Of course, that's not exactly what DeLay and his friends mean by "the criminalization of politics." They claim that too many prosecutors are seeing criminal behavior in what they believe is really politics as usual, and they profess utter astonishment that such confusion could occur.

1. White men sure do have some convincing ways of rationalizing

their crimes. It's not conspiracy, it's politics as usual. It's not insider trading, it's business as usual. It's not possible to do any wrong in this country, as long as you attend the right churches every Sunday morning.
