CONTRARIAN COMMENTARY BY ANDY MARTIN
AMERICA’S DAILY BRIEFING FOR OCTOBER 27, 2005
DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS? LOVE THOSE WHITE SOX
EVEN BASEBALL TURNS AGAINST BUSH
(CHICAGO)(October 27, 2005) Chicago is in a state of pandemonium this morning. Whistles, sirens, horns, screaming, it’s wild. The mighty Chicago White Sox have won the World Series after an 88-year drought (the year my mother was born!).
This column does not normally deal with baseball, but why not? Baseball was one of the most formative experiences of my young life. I wasn’t much of a player but even as a kid I was one hell of a manager. So I appreciate what goes into winning.
Besides, tonight it is impossible to concentrate. The din outside my window is awesome. (Yes, I live in Chicago.)
Well, is there a cosmic dimension to this great Chicago victory? Maybe, maybe not. As for myself, after finishing this column I’m going out to celebrate. This is no night to be a stick in the mud.
But what about President Bush and his mantra “Don’t mess with Texas?” The Chicago boys rolled into Texas, and rolled up the Houston Astros. No, Texans are not invincible. Bush is learning that the hard way.
