U.S. Public Opinion Never Sided with Harriet Miers
<snip> In a Gallup/CNN/USA Today survey conducted just days after the nomination, at least 44 per cent of respondents said they would be less likely to support Miers based on three specific issues: her close personal ties to Bush, the fact that she has never served as a judge, and little information about her views on major issues. <snip>

After two weeks of actual discussions about Miers, more Americans began to articulate dissent. A mid-October Rasmussen Reports survey put support for Miers’ confirmation at 32 per cent, with 28 per cent opposed. Eight days later, the numbers shifted, with 34 per cent of respondents voicing their rejection of Miers as a Supreme Court justice, with 30 per cent in favour. <snip>

A SurveyUSA poll conducted after the questionnaire story broke showed a reduction in the number of Americans who thought the Senate would confirm Miers, from 43 per cent to 39 per cent. The same study established an increase in the possibility that the nomination would not make it to the Senate floor, from 13 per cent to 16 per cent. <snip>
