The more they met her, the less they liked [Miers]
WASHINGTON -- In the time-honored ritual of presidential nominees making courtesy calls on senators in their offices, it is rare for a nominee to leave a meeting in worse shape than before she went in.

But that is exactly what happened to Harriet Miers, and on more than one occasion. Republican and Democratic senators used remarkably similar language while saying they were struck in their private meetings with Miers by how little she had to say for herself and how little she talked about the law.

After his session with Miers, Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), who is usually a solid ally of President Bush, said he had more concerns than before the meeting. Her performance was so dubious, he said, that it cast doubt on Miers' ability to handle her Senate confirmation hearings.

"I think there were some questions about how she would project before the committee," said Thune, referring to the Senate Judiciary Committee. He added that he had hoped Bush would nominate someone like Justices Antonin Scalia or Clarence Thomas. "It's not a reflection on her. It's partly her personality."

3. Yup, sounded like she was a "bad date" in general...
Durbin mentioned that they had nothing to talk about. She didn't want to talk about constitutional issues, or judicial ideas, or her work at the White House.

He sounded like he was reflecting on a bad date.

I wonder how Shrub could like her, if she's as cold and impersonable as they all made her sound.

7. So WTH was the point of the visits?
A genteel social call? A spot of tea? See ya, Harriet.

5. So, her personality isn't a reflection on her?
How does that work?

12. I don't know
I've met some people with horrid personalities who have been married for years.

Perhaps marriage was not something she wanted. Many people don't want to get married.

2. It's this kind of reaction from senators...
... It's just this kind of reaction that had me looking forward to watching her confirmation hearings... Or non-confirmation hearings.

I'd have loved to see her personally interview like a moron on television...

6. it's a sad, sad thing that all of us knew so much about bush before the
most important conservative minds of this country realized they were being led into the abyss by an unrepentant cronyistic drug-addled unreformed white-knuckle alcoholic. who only listens to his wife when he's scared shitless.

8. Strange
"She was not comfortable. She was ill at ease and not ready for this," Durbin said. "I came to conclude this was not her idea. She didn't have her heart in it."
