UAW endorses plan to slow down work

The six major industrial unions representing 33,650 hourly Delphi Corp. employees formed a coalition Monday in a solidified effort to take on the nation's largest auto parts supplier...

The coalition is called Mobilizing@Delphi. It consists of the UAW, International Union of Electrical Workers, United Steelworkers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and International Union of Operating Engineers...

"We are outraged by Delphi's attempt to use the bankruptcy process to dictate the radical destruction of the living standards of America's industrial workers," the unions said in a written statement Monday. "Make no mistake: While this is a fight for fairness for our members at Delphi, it is also a fight for fairness for all Delphi stakeholders."...

Last month, Delphi, the nation's largest manufacturer ever to file for bankruptcy, asked the UAW to accept hourly wages of $9.50-$10.50, compared with $25-$27 an hour today, along with major benefit concessions. Those include higher out-of-pocket health care costs with no vision or dental insurance, frozen pensions, fewer vacation days and restricted overtime...

1. UAW and the Delphi workers watched while it happened to everyone
else. Why did they think they weren't gonna get the same thing in the end?
