USO entertainers leave politics behind (Franken, Robin Williams)

Many opponents of President Bush and his decision to go to war in Iraq say that they "support the troops" despite their disagreement with the president.

But some of the president's most vocal opponents are demonstrating that support in a tangible, and risky, way.

Comedian and liberal radio host Al Franken is in Iraq this week, entertaining troops at United Service Organization shows at military bases around that war-torn nation.

Robin Williams, who is also critical of the decision to go to war, has performed at USO shows in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Celebrities who take that chance boost troop morale in ways that even the highest official visitors cannot. One soldier compared a show by Robin Williams to a visit by President Bush: "The president's visit was really cool, but you know, sir, he had to come. And Robin Williams didn't."
