Radical Right Group Claims Barbie Is “Tool For Promoting Gender Confusion
Caught this one on the HuffPo, fundies at it again:

The iconic Barbie Doll has become another tool for promoting gender confusion among children. On the Barbie Web site, www.Barbie.com, there is a poll that asks children their age and sex. The age choices are 4-8, but as Bob Knight, Director of CWA’s Culture & Family Institute, notes children are given three options for their choice of gender. Click here to listen.

1. Actually I agree with that
Barbie is neuter, asexual and anatomically incorrect.

4. Asexual?
Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 10:26 AM by Atman
Why, because she doesn't have labia? That's silly (on edit: I had originally typed "that's nuts" but thought that term might just further confuse the issue!). Hypersexual, perhaps. Face it, she if far more anatomically "correct" than Ken, poor dickless bastard. If anything might contribute to gender confusion, maybe it's the 50DD hooters. When little girls grow up with "mere" B cups, they might think they're actually men. After all, Ken has just as much goin' on in his shorts as Babs does!

5. It's a curious choice
It's a curious choice for a child -- I would expect a four-year-old would not be surfing solo, and would they have the reading skills to answer a questionnaire?

The bs coming from the "Concerned" Women, however, is to be expected. They must create enemies everywhere, to bolster their self-image as crusader. Sad.

6. Funny
I thought it was a tool for promoting self image problems and eating disorders...

The only gender confusion there could possibly be is the lack of complete private parts (and no kids don't need that). Oh and Ken was so totally emasculated that they discontinued the poor guy.

7. Old Babs is a lot of things
but genderless is not one of them.

Basically, she is a freak who could never stand upright on her own.

What do they want, labia?

8. The choices are: Boy, Girl, I don't know.
C'mon! If you didn't actually read the story, all the headlines might lead you to think the choices are Male, Female, Gay, or Male, Female, Transgendered.

Personally, I wouldn't have a huge problem with the transgendered option, as there ARE transgendered kids. I'd have a problem with the gay option because Gay is not a gender, its a sexual preference, and I don't think asking kids their sexual preference is appropriate for a Barbie site. (And that's also not what the question asked.

But "I don't know?" Seems harmless, and maybe an opportunity for parents of young kids (who shouldn't be surfing without supervision anyway) to discuss that.
