Predictions of an Economic Hit Man
Predictions of an Economic Hit Man

By John Perkins, AlterNet. Posted January 13, 2006.

The controversial author explains why Bolivia's new president, Argentina's anti-IMF rebellion and the NYC transit strike are all harbingers of things to come.

Most people in the United States know that a transit strike crippled New York City. Fewer are aware that seven South American countries, representing over 80 percent of the continent's population, recently elected presidents with anti-American sentiments. The former has an immediate effect. The latter will impact our children for decades to come.

In December 2005, Evo Morales buried seven challengers -- taking 54 percent of the vote -- in what the New York Times referred to as "the most important election since Bolivia's transition from dictatorship to democracy a generation ago." His platform appealed to the poor, including farmers whose main source of income, coca plants, caused them to suffer brutal treatment at the hands of U.S. drug agents. Although U.S. politicians and the media have denounced coca because it is used to produce cocaine, the fact is that it is extremely important in the Andes as a legal remedy for altitude sickness, digestive problems and other illnesses.

Evo Morales is the latest in a long list of democratically elected Latin American presidents whose primary appeal is their opposition to U.S., IMF and World Bank policies that favor foreign corporations with reputations for exploiting natural resources and local labor. Bolivia joins the ranks of previously pro-American countries that have recently turned against Washington and Wall Street, such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Argentina's President Kirchner recently announced what has been hailed as an "anti-IMF rebellion." He paid off nearly $10 billion in IMF debt in order to get out from under a burden that, he said, "caused poverty and pain among the Argentine people."

1. I find this a very encouraging trend...
It's long past time for our Western Hemisphere neighbors to get out from under the yoke of US Government/Corporate oppression. I wish them continued success in their attempt to strike out on their own, and hope they will be able to gain strength through mutual cooperation. SG

2. What will we do once the old scams stop working?
It's not like the rest of the world is as dumb as our Republicans. For christ sakes, how long has mudracking been around and they still fall for the shit? Give it a new name, swiftboating, and they all get suckered in again.

If you're honest, you have to recognize that for latin America, socialism will be the only civilized response to dealing with diminishing resources. Because the alternative, anarchistic capitalism, will eventually result in civil revolution. So I would hope that the capitalist anarchists in this country can figure out a way to make nice with the socialist in their countries.

4. Super illustration. How refreshing.
It's the very first Evo Morales 'toon I've seen. Not even the President yet, either.

Wish him and the real Bolivian people all the luck in the world.

5. Judi - You know what is wild? I just today figured out that the author of
"Confessions of An Economic Hitman", John Perkins, is the very same friend of mine and teacher who I met over 20 years ago and with whom I spent much time down in the Amazon among the Achuar, Schuar and Huarani tribes in Equador. I have never read the book (although lots of people on DU and elsewhere have been talking about it and its on my "must read" list) but with two young children, I've been so busy and never have enough time to read all the books I want. Sure, the name "John Perkins" is one I know, but all the writings that John has done in the past is related to shapeshifing and shaman teachings. My first "Ayuahuasca" experience was in the mid-90's with John.

My jaw dropped when I suddenely made the connection about 10 minutes ago...I haven't seen John in about 4 years (since having children) but we have a lot of friends in common here in the Bay Area. I'm going to be getting in touch with him soon because I feel that so much has happened since we last saw eachother and what is wildest of all was in particular some of the prophesies that came to him and I when we were all in the Amazon on a trip in 1997 where the shamans talked about the "Men in the North who wanted Pachamama's Blood (Oil)". They said to us that great wars were going to be started and there was going to be much death and suffering. They also said that Pachamama (Mother Earth in Quechua - and yes, my chosen name on DU) was going to be getting very angry and that there would be many natural disasters and destruction.

I knew of John's past with the IMF/World Bank and some of his work before his shamanic learnings and the things he taught me. I had NO IDEA that he had this story to tell (Confessions of an Economic Hitman) and I am feeling chills in needing to contact him....wow....

8. Good grief! I've often wondered about the origin of your name.
What an amazing admission! You'd better read that book in a hurry.

I've seen so many DU'ers posts praising it I've grabbed a copy, and just haven't had the time, yet.

I hope, at some point, you'll be in touch with him again, and give us an update, if you're inclined. He's one of a kind. Too bad there haven't been far more people like him.

Very slow loading photo

People who actually spend a lot of time serving the greater good are few and far between. I'm so happy to read your post. Thank you.

9. Do you have any links to articles along
the line of these predictions? I have a very good friend who has been telling me of similar prophecies, but I haven't read much about it.
