Alito favors imperial president
U.S. Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito enjoys strong support from the religious right wing of the Republican Party. Most supporters are convinced that Alito would act quickly to doom a woman's legal right to terminate her pregnancy, even to save her own life.
While this would be a victory for religious conservatives, it is hardly the most important issue before us. As President Bush spirals into the Nixonian abyss of self-proclaimed emperorship - admitting to illegal wiretaps on American citizens and declaring himself above the law - the real issue concerns the checks and balances of presidential power.
<snip>
Considering the unequaled corruption, secrecy, abuse of power and excesses of the Bush administration, Congress needs to determine whether Alito has outgrown these unconstitutional ideas and, if he has not, should deny confirmation.
