Save the WORLD!!! Ban the Light Bulb.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4667354.stm

snip:
With lighting contributing 5-10% towards the typical electricity bill in the developed world, and even more in the developing world, the savings could really mount up.

Low-energy light bulbs would be a first step to curbing climate change
It has been estimated that if every household in the US replaced just three of its incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving designs and used them for five hours per day, it would reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 23 million tonnes, reduce electricity demand by the equivalent of 11 coal-fired power stations and save $1.8bn.

1. No
Our Monkey-in-charge wants us to go nuke-you-lar, and remove mountaintops for coal, instead.

6. They do. However, not always the best fit in some lamps
But we have a mix of about 50/50 in our house. As the older ones burn out, we'll replace more with the efficient ones.

22. They now sell small compacts that are the size of incandescent bulbs.
They work very well.

I've replaced almost all the bulbs in my house with these.

19. You may like candles, but they're very inefficient
(a lot of the energy comes out as heat), and plain candles are also made from oil, so you're still contributing to global warming. If they're candles made from animal products, that's also pretty inefficient (just as eating meat is).

12. a 60 watt floresent uses about 15 watts.. keep your reciept and write on
base of the bulb the date and a number you also make write it on the reciept.. they do burn out and you can replace them free..for 5 years some burn out in about 2 years

15. there is a new bulb comming out that uses 39% less energy, it is a LED
with a special crystal plastered on it

non-carbon chain oil like AMSOIL, flashpoint of 980*F, with a bypas filter that removes all byproducts and particles down to 4 microns you only have to change the oil every 250,000 miles and the extended wear can get you over 1,000,000 miles on an engine.
this could free us from forign oil.

hemp oil could free us from oil, that is why agricultural hemp is illegal.. it doesnt need to be plowed and is impregnated with Legume bacteria and produces its own fertilizer.. and makes non acid paper and great fabric and wood prodicts. and puts farmers in buisness

4 solar units 10 miles square across the usa can prodeuce over 70% of daytime energy, Bu$h vetoed the money his first week in office.. there is lots of ways to enter the 21st century in an enlightened manner..

7. I have them.
I have them in most of my fixtures. They even have ones for three way fixtures now. They use less electricity and, in the summer, cut down slightly on air conditioning since they don't emit near as much heat as incandescents. My one beef is that they don't seem to last as long as is claimed. They last longer than incandescents but I'm not sure if they're efficient costwise due to the higher replacement costs, even if I factor in electricity savings. I use them even so, but there will probably have to be clear savings (or a mandate) before they're adopted by the vast majority.

9. Even better than fluorescents...LED's...
100,000+ hrs of use, dimmable (unlike fluorescents), 5 watts or less power consumption.

14. Those look great..
But they are a bit pricey. There's probably a savings over the lifetime of the light but people might be hesitant to put out $19.95 for every lamp in the house. Hopefully they'll come down in price.

16. buy them for where you want dimmable lights...
for example, a closet light (seldom used, no neeed to dim) would be an excellent place for a fluorescent.

but the lights in a dining room or living room, often used, where you sometimees want to dim...buy a LED.

17. That gives me a thought.
My dining room ceiling fixture is on a dimmer so it still has incandescents. Maybe I could replace it with these. But it'll cost me around $120.00. I'll have to think about that. Maybe I'll shop around the web and see if I can find a better price.

26. Cool!
I converted to compact fluorescents a long time ago, but will start replacing those with LEDs one at a time. VERY nice!

I love the Wiedamark website and their other products, too, and have bookmarked it for the future. Thanks!

8. Incandescent lights are banned in my house
I don't miss them at all. I figure I've probably cut about 1,000 Watts by using the fluorescents.

13. Plants.
This is not a joke or anything, I really HAVE thought this would be a nice idea.

Use genetic engineering to cross plants, like morning glories, etc. that bloom and wilt at certain times a day, and give them bio luminescence. That way, a house could have an all natural lighting system growing all over it that turns itself on and off, and sunroofs and a new style of open housing would allow it to get sunlight.

25. But changing lightbulbs is something individuals can do...
Cutting out war is a problem that requires a slightly more collectivist solution. Changing light bulbs is something small that individuals can do that does make a difference.

However, such steps are part of that "be the change you want to see in the world" that is just so damned unpopular among so many here on DU....
