Bush squirms as policies denounced at King funeral
President George Bush led a crowd of 10,000 mourners at yesterday's funeral for Coretta Scott King, one of the icons of the civil rights movement, only to squirm in his seat as one speaker after another invoked Mrs King's spirit to lambast his administration on everything from the Iraq war to the response to last year's Hurricane Katrina.

The lavish occasion, bringing together civil rights veterans, three former presidents, more than a dozen senators, musicians and poets at a megachurch in the suburbs of Atlanta, was both a tribute to the woman who carried on the campaigning legacy of her assassinated husband, Martin Luther King Jr, for almost 40 years and also an opportunity to invoke some of the Kings' passionately outspoken rhetoric.

President Bush called Mrs King, who died 10 days ago at the age of 78, "one of the most admired Americans of our time". Her nearest and dearest pointedly did not return the compliment. "We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there," said Joseph Lowery, who co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Dr King more than 40 years ago, "but Coretta knew and we knew that there are weapons of misdirection right down here." The Rev Lowery issued a searing indictment of the Bush administration's economic priorities. "For war billions more," he said, "but no more for the poor."

Far better received than President Bush was Bill Clinton, who won an enthusiastic ovation as he described how Mrs King might easily have given up the civil rights struggle after her husband's assassination in 1968. Instead, he said, she asked herself "What am I going to do with the rest of my life?"

8. Trapped like a sewer rat.
Bush really had no choice. If he had refused to go (which is probably what he wanted) it would have been extremely bad form.

Since he had no choice, he went. I'm sure the King family was classy, unlike that trailer trash George and Laura.

We could all learn some things from these dignified people.

the squirm factor at least 10 fold.

and it was a joy to watch him being uncomfortable. As the old timers would say, "Bush was so drawn up that you couldn't have driven a ten-penny nail up his ass with a twenty-pound sledge hammer!"

4. bush also exhibited incongruent behavior at times during the C.K. funeral.
(by incongruent behavior i mean incongruent facial expressions, as in looking happy when speakers were making a serious, or painful point about the Kings' lives.)

He squirmed like a kid. Everyone else sat with dignity and respect. He flipped through the program.

Always can count on him to be an embarrassment. :banghead:

But how wonderful to hear and see him so gracefully taken to task! :toast: :grouphug:

All the speakers were great, except * and his sire, but I always love to hear Ms. Height speak. We share a birthday! She is an amazing woman with an amazing life.:loveya:

In peace and hope,
V

10. I'm surprised some church lady
didn't jab his shoulder and tell him to sit up straight and fold his hands in his lap. His slouching was body language that I bet every viewer read as a signal that he thought it a waste of his time.

11. My Grandma would've pinched us on the arm
(second warning, of course)if we had acted like that. It was disrespectful. He did give the appearance that it was a waste of his time, little prick! And that was even before he was taken to task.

At least he got his photo op, that's what really mattered. :sarcasm:

27. You hit it on the
nose MissWaverly! Leg over the arm, shaking up and down. Crumbs all over his shirt with dip smeared across his lips, powder under his nose. And his beer stuffed into the side of the cushion. Scratching things. What a slovenly beast!

Just can't bear to call him a pig as they are quite lovely creatures, very smart, no comparison.

The way * and Pickles kept flipping through the programs and whispering while there were speakers was beyond rude. And these are our country's "elite"? Ha! I know pig farmers with far better manners.

In peace and hope,
V

cult followers and would never question anything he does. Remember how Koresch in Waco was sleeping with teenage girls? None of his followers seemed to mind at all. They probably volunteered their daughters.

Mindless sheep. Lambs to the slaughter.

And innocents suffer for their mindless devotion. :grr:

In peace and hope,

Is beyond me, how can they think he's on a highway to heaven when they saw what happened
to the victims of Katrina. What part of compassionate christian applied to that situation.
Those people are still living w/o even the debri cleared and the remaining bodies recovered.

22. I actually would wish for nothing more than a huge change of heart for W
If only it were possible for the experience to be life-changing for him, were he a braver man, capable of opening his heart to the powerful hunger for peace and justice that was present in that room and in those voices.

No one on the planet, perhaps, could have a bigger impact. Of course, the powers-that-be would ensure that it lasted no longer than 5 minutes.

23. Of course this is in the international press. One quibble though.
I'd hardly call what George did "leading a crowd." Squirming in his seat in the midst of a hostile crowd would be a more apt description.

looking for an exit, scanning the program to see "How much longer?" and wishing he was anywhere else. There were leaders there; he wasn't one of them.

I'd say those six hours of him having to hear the unvarnished, uncensored, and unfiltered truth (six hours! you gotta love it) were the most important six hours in America of all the hours since just after 9/11. If his blinders aren't off even a little today, he's twice the sociopath we've thought him all this time.
