Booby Prize by Gerald M. Steinberg
On November 6, the Sydney Peace Foundation and Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (under the auspices of the University of Sydney) is planning to award its annual peace prize to Hanan Ashrawi.

When the decision was made to present the A$50,000 prize to her, the center's director, Stuart Rees, thought that in his politically correct anti-Israel environment, this award would be highly popular. He persuaded Bob Carr – the premier of the New South Wales province and a rising star in Australian politics – to make the award, supported by the mayor of Sydney and other politicians.

However, these assumptions proved to be very wrong. As word seeped out, so did the reality of Ms. Ashrawi's role as a major Palestinian propagandist. Ashrawi is a prominent member of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and has served as the official spokeswoman of PLO leader Yasser Arafat. Under its various wings (Fatah, al-Aksa Brigades, Force 17, etc.) the PLO continues to be involved directly in terror attacks against Israeli civilians, and as a very popular media figure, Ashrawi plays a central role in attempting to justify this strategy.

1. The Jerusalem Post? Sheesh, why not quote Richard Perle directly?
He's a director of that publication.

Try these sources for some objective reporting on Hanan Ashrawi.

<snip> Perle has close business ties with Conrad Black, chairman of Hollinger International Inc., which owns more than 400 daily and weekly newspapers in Canada, the United States, Britain, Israel and Australia. Hollinger papers include London's Daily Telegraph, the Chicago Sun-Times, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Jerusalem Post. Perle uses these papers and others to trumpet his anti-Saddam sentiments and to tangle with political figures, such as British Minister Clare Short, who opposes the Perle line on Iraq. Black, a Canadian, recently joined fellow media kingpin Rupert Murdoch in defending British Prime Minister Tony Blair's decision to stick with Bush's war aims, despite overwhelming domestic opposition.

Perle is a top executive of Hollinger Digital Inc., which is the media management and investment arm of Hollinger. Perle is listed on various corporate boards through his association with Hollinger. Whether or not Perle speaks for Bush, the president's recent reasoning on Iraq follows a pattern found in Perle's writings, particularly in a lengthy piece for Israel Insider, which uses numerous non-sequiters in its emotionally-charged connection of Saddam to terrorist activity. </snip>

This is from an official biography at the American Enterprise Institute:
<snip> Professional Experience
-Member, Defense Policy Board; Chairman, 2001-2003
-Chairman and chief executive officer, Hollinger Digital, Inc.
-Director, Jerusalem Post </snip>

On edit: While it's not particularly germane to the JP's rhetoric about Hanan Ashrawi, it's perhaps worth noting that she is a non-practicing Episcopalian.

Now that you have attempted to destroy the messenger, you may feel superior in also attempting to destroy the message.

But you haven't.

6. Uh, my very first post here...
...provided information on the subject of your thread, Hanan Ashrawi.

No superiority on my part. I simply prefer to get my news from non-Neo-Con sources, thank you.

7. Just as a way to gather facts
One might try reading various viewpoints. I read Mother Jones, and Daniel Pipes, put them (any two opposing viewpoints) side by side and it can be great fun. Then get objective facts and see where you agree with whose conclusions. Facts should not change, just conclusions.
