The Hammer drops: For Tom Delay, power eclipsed principle

Quitting the House of Representatives seems out of character for Rep. Tom DeLay.
The man is a fighter, a never-give-an-inch partisan whose every statement exudes a conviction that his troubles have been engineered by Democrats. By announcing his resignation Monday, the Texas Republican nicknamed The Hammer guaranteed that the exoneration he confidently predicts will, if it ever comes, be a footnote. <snip>

An illuminating story is told of Tom DeLay: An employee in the Capitol Building once told DeLay to put out his cigar, because no smoking was allowed in government buildings. "I am the federal government." DeLay said.
