Bush, GOP Struggle for Public Approval

By RON FOURNIER
AP Political Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush has hit new lows in public opinion for his handling of Iraq and the war on terror and for his overall job performance. Polling also shows the Republican Party surrendering its advantage on national security.

The AP-Ipsos survey is loaded with grim election-year news for a party struggling to stay in power. Nearly 70 percent of Americans believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction - the largest percentage during the Bush presidency and up 13 points from a year ago.

"These numbers are scary. We've lost every advantage we've ever had," GOP pollster Tony Fabrizio said. "The good news is Democrats don't have much of a plan. The bad news is they may not need one."

1. Oh, it's one of "those" stories
"Jeff, what can President Bush do to turn things around?"

"David, why is President Bush not succeeding with the American people these days? Is it healthy for the country for the President to have such a hard time governing?"

"Tim, how can President Bush re-connect with the American people again?"

2. Wow, he voiced a thought I've had lately
-- in that last line quoted in this OP:

It really IS bad news for the Repugs if their ineptitude and criminal behavior have become so glaringly apparent that our population as a whole won't even require a "plan" from the Dems to win votes!

Not that Dems don't have good plans along with good principles to base any plan, and plan revisions when neccesary, upon. Principles I'm hoping most voters of all stripes have been aware of all along, and will decide to return to after giving these lying, cheating, war-mongering Repugs way too long to do things their way.

Perhaps it would be better, in fact, for Dems to simply remind everyone of the longstanding Democratic party principles instead of appearing to be scrambling to find a message they can all agree on to the finest little detail?

Let the Repugs do all the scrambling as they seek a way to explain all they've done that Americans are now saying points this country in the WRONG direction! Let them scurry like cockroaches, blaming each other and participating in bitter internal fights, feuds, and vendettas, reflecting their true inner selves for all to see. It's going on right now and probably will continue for some time to come.

I say just let 'em keep on showing voters what liars and criminals they are ... while Dems maintain a dignified stand on a trustworthy Dem party platform that hasn't changed much in my lifetime!
