CNN Money: Why Global Warming is GOOD for Business

Why global warming is good for business

Climate change isn't all bad news. In fact, there may well be money in it.

http://money.cnn.com/2006/04/13/technology/business2_futureboy0413/index.htm

How do you make money?

"1) Consumer guilt. Growing concern about global warming - and the urge to do something about it - is a boon for startups..."

This is part of a two part strategy AGAINST fighting global warming.

Their first line of attack, is that global warming is a "natural" occurance and that mankind has nothing to do with it. As I was recently told (twice) by a local TV weatherman during an impromtu debate at a local pub - "How dare mankind be so arrogant to think we could change the environment."

Next, is this argument that global warming will actually be good for business. The first time I heard this line was on TV a few years back from some CATO Institute whore who was touting the benefits to shipping once the polar ice caps melt!

Taken together, the argurments that global warming is nothing unusual and will actually be good for businesss are designed to get us to do NOTHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM.

While Gore was correct that FIGHTING global warming will be an economic plus and some of this article touches on that, beware of this line of attack from our friends in Corporate Media.

IS ANYTHING THAT IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS GOING TO BE STOPPED?

IF SOME GLOBAL WARMING IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS,

WILL MORE GLOBAL WARMING BE BETTER???

2. Al Gore repeatedly outlined how combating global warming
would be good for the economy.

4. This is different
The people behind this don't want to change anything. Global warming is another cash cow to them.

What Al Gore is saying is that we need to change our thinking. No more "business as usual" concepts.

Some tough decisions need to be made and the sooner we think and adapt to them, the easier it will be.

Not immensely profitable, just enough to drive the process.

3. Atmospheric Oxygen becoming scarce: "very good for business!"
Well maybe not a business page headline just yet, but your kids' kids will know the great taste of bottled oxygen as marketed under different tradenames by Nestle, General Foods, Halliburton, and Coke.

6. Uh,,,they're suggesting there's ways to make money
by being part of the solution, not the problem. Why did you cut off the rest of the sentence?

"(...is a boon for startups) like TerraPass, an outfit that's in the guilt-reduction business. TerraPass offers to offset the amount of carbon dioxide your car emits for between $30 and $80 a year, by investing it in clean energy projects that reduce carbon elsewhere in the world."

Or how about

"2) The Kyoto Treaty. Even though the U.S. hasn't signed on, much of the rest of the world is following an international agreement to reduce carbon emissions. That means a larger market for clean technologies. The best part is that you don't have to own a factory with smokestacks to profit from emissions reductions."

And then there's

"3) Human relations. When Whole Foods Markets (Research) announced in January that it would buy all of its electricity from wind farms, making itself the corporate world's largest consumer of renewable energy"

These are the sort of things that Gore talks about when he talks about "FIGHTING global warming."

7. Well, you either get it or you don't..
I'll refer you to Canuckistanian in Reply #4: "This is different."

As to why I "cut off the rest of the sentence?"

Two reasons:
1) I can
2) That's the part of the sentence that I got the biggest kick from. I'm just here for the jollies.

Make money off of "CONSUMER GUILT? ???

WTF !!!

Today I was reading about the head of Exxon getting a $ 400 million dollar retirement package.

AND I'M SUPPOSED TO FEEL GUILTY? Yeah, right.

As far as I'm concerned -

"I don't care about pollution / I'm an air conditioned gypsy / That's my solution."

Not really, I just always liked that lyric line!

9. This seems to be the message they are pushing...
George Will recently:

"In fact, the Earth is always experiencing either warming or cooling. But suppose the scientists and their journalistic conduits, who today say they were so spectacularly wrong so recently, are now correct. Suppose the Earth is warming and suppose the warming is caused by human activity. Are we sure there will be proportionate benefits from whatever climate change can be purchased at the cost of slowing economic growth and spending trillions? Are we sure the consequences of climate change -- remember, a thick sheet of ice once covered the Midwest -- must be bad?Or has the science-journalism complex decided that debate about these questions, too, is "over"?"
