Kristallnacht Marks 65th Anniversary of the Holocaust
Translated into English, the German word Kristallnacht means night of broken glass. It refers to November 9, 1938, when organized anti-Jewish riots started in Germany and Austria. On November 9 and 10, hundreds of synagogues and shops were burned and thousands of Jews were arrested and deported. It was the harbinger of the Holocaust

November 9, 2003, marks the 65th anniversary of Kristallnacht and is being commemorated around the world. The American Red Cross wishes to commemorate this tragic event with a ray of hope. Through its Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center and more than 900 chapters across the country, the American Red Cross seeks the fates of loved ones, Jews and non-Jews, missing since the Holocaust and its aftermath. We assist U.S. residents searching for proof of internment, forced or slave labor, or evacuation from former Soviet territories on themselves or family members.

1. The Red Cross?
Come on, has the International Red Cross even accepted the Magen David Adom for full-fledged membership as yet?

Yes, we must recall Kristallnacht and know that there are forces out there that want to complete the job. But the International Red Cross has no good standing in this issue whatsoever.

2. The Red Cross
is an example of ...I'm not sure. Historically, they have been useless.

8. You are correct.
You may recall the woman who was forced to resign as head of the Red Cross last year. Part of her being forced out is that she insisted upon them accepting the Magen David Adom for full-fledged membership.

It was unseemly of me to use them as a source, I know, but this subject seems to touch so many people on DU in such different ways that I searched for a non-Jewish site.

Will both you and Rini please accept my apologies for offending you?

The International Red Cross is a different issue. No apologies needed.

6. Yes, Kennedy was assassinated on 11/22/63, but
today is the 9th of November which obviously means this is the EXACT date 65 years after the night of broken glass.

4. Thank you for posting
We should indeed remember Kritallnacht. The Holocaust is emblematic of the consequences of racial and ethnic hatred that should never again be visited on Jews or any other ethnic group or individual member of a group.

This is a day to dedicate to the victims of racism everywhere. We should resolve to banish the scourge of hatred from each of our own hearts and rid the world of it.
