What a Great Nation Would Do
What a Great Nation Would Do

A great nation is like a great man:
When he makes a mistake, he realizes it.
Having realized it, he admits it.
Having admitted it, he corrects it.
He considers those who point out his faults
as his most benevolent teachers.
He thinks of his enemy
as the shadow he himself casts.

-- Lao-Tzu, Tao Te Ching,
Stephen Mitchell, trans.

They say America was a great nation once.

1. A great nation would NEVER have a Bush as president.
The fact that the Chimperor is there is proof our greatness has disappeared.

Whether or not 2004 was stolen, the fact that enough fools voted for chimpy after the first 4 years is a national disgrace.

2. "They say America was a great nation once."
Sad but true. I wonder if we have the will to be a great nation anymore? With success and isolation comes apathy and selfishness...and now it seems we're paying the price for it.

3. I'm not sure this nation ever really was "great"
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 04:34 PM by Selatius
It's a "myth." This nation, like any other powerful nation, has done ugly things throughout its history from waging war on Mexico to supporting dictators from Pinochet to the Shah and overthrowing democratically elected governments in the interests of corporate greed.

If a nation's greatness is guaged by the myth of what that nation never was, then all nations are equally great...and equally good at lying to themselves.

6. I believe people can be great, not artificial nation-states
National boundaries and governments are things I don't value more than people and individuals because when nations crumble, people remain. Governments are too often tools of oppression by the wealthy minority against the poor majority.
