I would think they need look no further then the fact that the president is a liar. He misled us into the war in Iraq, authorized illegal warrentless domestic eavesdropping, turned a blind eye toward prisoner abuse, sought the right to torture prisoners, many held without charges in secret prisons, and leaked classified information that resulted in the disclosure of a CIA undercover agent's identity, which led to the resignation and indictment of the vice president's former chief of staff for perjury and obstruction of justice. On the same day he spoke before the American Legion (February 24) claiming that Iraq had “125 battalions with 50 in the lead” fighting the insurgents, the Pentagon reported that not a single Iraqi battalion was “battle ready.”
Meanwhile we have Vice President Dick Cheney expressing “no regrets” on the decision to invade Iraq, threatening that Iran faces “meaningful consequences” should it continue its nuclear power program, and shooting his mouth off as he travels the world on his “freedom agenda,” accusing Russia of “unfairly and improperly restricting” people's rights and “intimidation” with its vast resources of oil and gas, as if that is the reason for our spiraling gasoline prices.
Republicans are obviously down playing talk of impeachment, as if these reasons do not qualify as high crimes and misdemeanors worthy of impeachment, but consider their “reasons” for the attempted impeachment of former President Bill Clinton and what Republicans would be saying if John Kerry and John Edwards had been elected in 2004 and this was their record.
The corporate media also appear to be down playing talk of impeachment, as if we have no choice but to live with this president for the next two and a half years. We do have a choice. Don’t forget that Watergate was at first considered a “third-rate burglary” and Richard Nixon was re-elected by an overwhelming mandate only to resign in disgrace two years later. This president could do the same as Nixon should this momentum continue to grow, as I believe it will...
