Editor, Times-Dispatch: One would think that Kathleen Parker, a syndicated columnist and journalist for more than 20 years, would know how to apply correct adjectives to the subjects about whom she writes.
After reading her Op/Ed column, "Allen May Have Been a Renegade, But Not a Racist," even I, no wordsmith, quickly realized that either she doesn't know the correct meaning of renegade, or clearly she doesn't know Senator George Allen.
According to the MerriamWebster dictionary, a renegade is "a deserter from one faith, cause, or allegiance to another." Ms. Parker obviously isn't knowledgeable about Allen's allegiance to the Republican Party. I thought it an interesting term to use for someone who has voted with George Bush 97 percent of the time.
Perhaps she is getting George Allen mixed up with Virginia's other U.S. Senator, John Warner. Warner might be considered a renegade. After all, it appears he takes into consideration his own beliefs and his constituents' wishes, not the Republican Party's, when he votes on issues. Allen uses neither when he votes. He looks to the Republican Party first and foremost. He worked harder as the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee than he has for any Virginian.
