Karl Rove Indictment an elaborate Hoax? Did Jason Leopold get Rolled?
Most of US Media Waiting to see with Held Breath
by Steven Leser

Steven Leser
Despite right wing media and blogosphere accusations, Jason Leopold has been a reliable source for some time. For now, I am willing to take it on faith that he has numerous well placed sources that did in fact tell him that Karl Rove had been indicted. As a journalist for Truthout ( http://www.truthout.org ), Jason has broken numerous stories ahead of the rest of the media which up until now have all proven to be true. If his story on the Rove indictment is incorrect, and I want to stress that we do not know either way right now, I have a theory as to what might have happened. Admittedly, like many theories, mine has several assumptions and ‘what ifs’ but each reader will have to decide for themselves what they believe. Eventually the truth will come out anyway.

We know that the Bush White House detests leaks perhaps more than any other administration in history. It is a relative certainty that Leopold’s past articles have gotten the attention of many in the administration. Assume for a moment that an internal White House investigation was conducted to ferret out those leaking information to Leopold. Once discovered, these individuals would be an excellent avenue with which to discredit Leopold by providing them false information which would then be transferred to the reporter. Again, I am making assumptions and I want to dutifully make that clear. Now, assuming the White House had accurately identified the leakers. Let us take it one step further. Let us assume the White House sat on that information until an opportune moment presented itself. Such an opportune moment presented itself when it became clear that an embarrassing piece of evidence regarding Vice President Cheney was going to be submitted in a filing by Fitzgerald. The administration could provide a tasty bit of disinformation to Leopold’s sources and the attention of the reporter along with a fair amount of the progressive press would be turned to a story that would turn out to be false. This story and the rapid discovery that it was a hoax would overshadow the embarrassing filing by Prosecutor Fitzgerald. Indeed, it would overshadow the entire CIA Leak-Gate investigation or at least the reporting thereof for some time.

Again, we do not know at this point whether Leopold’s story is accurate or not and it if is not, we do not know why but I want to point out that if it turns out to not be accurate, there are a lot of possibilities. Rushing to a negative judgment of Jason is unfair until all the facts come out.

1. Note to moderators, I felt this might want to be posted in breaking news..
...even though one could call it an editorial. Feel free to move if you feel that would be better.

2. Fitzgerald doesn't like leaks from his office
I wonder where the leaks came from?

Who knows.

3. "We know that the Bush White House detests leaks"
They are also the master of leaking information and denying knowledge.

4. Again I say-- what's the point of gabbing about how...
Leopold "might" have been rolled when we still don't know whether or not he got the story right?

Is it at all possible for people to shut up about this and stop stirring the pot until we know?

10. Ah, the voice of reason......
How dare you try to make sense when people are wallowing in fantasy-based hysteria?

And, while I've got your attention, why do you hate America?

Seriously, there was no leak from Fitzgerald's office - never was, never will be. The guy's run impeccable investigations, all characterized by perfect secrecy. This, among other things, has defined Fitzgerald's career.

This secrecy, which is appropriate and necessary, drives people mad, and they lose their otherwise good sense and start seeing imaginary sealed indictments on Saturday nights and fifteen-hour meetings in defendant's counsel's offices when prosecutors never go to defendant's counsel's offices.

Your post was perfect. Thanks.

5. If Leser is right
then we are given further insight into the rising totalitarian state.

Now is the time for all good people to come to the aide of their country. Impeach *

6. Is Stephen Leser jumping the gun with his commentary? Or is he....
...part of an elaborate hoax to discredit Jason Leopold, Will Pitt, and Truthout?

See how a post like that works? Doesn't feel very good, does it?

First, Leopold stated in his article that a Rove indictment will be made public sometime this week. It could happen any day this week depending on how events unfold. IMHO, you've jumped the gun by posting your comments at this point in time.

Second, stating that "the Bush White House detests leaks perhaps more than any other administration in history", ignores the fact that Karl Rove is NOT very well liked within the Executive Branch. He has enemies within that structure who would like nothing better than to see him literally frog-marched out of the White House.

Did you jump the gun? Only time will tell.

it won't be a big deal nationally if it turns out to be false.

12. I'm more than a little surprised about the negative reaction to this here.
Tell you what I WILL do. I am going to call Jason a little later (I think I still have a working number for him) and if he or William Pitt are upset at all about what I wrote, I will write a very public apology.

22. I have not responded to your
PM's as you do not have that level of familiarity with me. I find them intrusive and an attempt to be controlling. If you have anything to say to me then do it in open text.

18. remember Doug Thompson and Capitol Hill Blue?
Here's a snip.

On Tuesday, we ran a story headlined "White House admits Bush wrong about Iraqi nukes." For the first time, Wilkinson said he was willing to go on the record and told a story about being present, as a CIA contract consultant, at two briefings with Bush. He said he was retired now and was fed up and wanted to go public.

"He (Bush) said that if the current operatives working for the CIA couldn't prove the story was true, then the agency had better find some who could," Wilkinson said in our story. "He said he knew the story was true and so would the world after American troops secured the country."

After the story ran, we received a number of emails or phone calls that (1) either claimed Wilkinson was lying or (2) doubted his existence. I quickly dismissed the claims. After all, I had known this guy for 20+ years and had no doubt about his credibility. Some people wanted to talk to him, so I forwarded those requests on to him via email. He didn't answer my emails, which I found odd. I should have listened to a bell that should have been going off in my ear.

Today, a White House source I know and trust said visitor logs don't have any record of anyone named Terrance J. Wilkinson ever being present at a meeting with the President. Then a CIA source I trust said the agency had no record of a contract consultant with that name. "Nobody, and I mean nobody, has ever heard of this guy," my source said.
