This letter to the editor in the New York Times sums perfectly how I feel.
Edited on Mon May-15-06 04:20 PM by NNadir
To the Editor:

The problem isn't the Democrats' inability to find a message. It's the American public's inability to face up to the truth.

For a long time, truth tellers risked being framed and narrated out of the picture, with maybe a little ridicule and scorn thrown in for good effect.

Jimmy Carter tried to tell us that the energy crisis was a situation akin to war. Al Gore tried to tell us that we had to take care of the earth before it turns on us...

This is exactly what I think.

The problem isn't with the messengers. The problem is with the listeners.

1. we keep killing the messenger
or should I say swift-boating the messenger? If I told the president the White House was on fire, do you suppose he would grab a fire extinguisher or have Karl Rove discredit me?

2. People liked Stalin and Hitler also
The most effective dictators have a knack with getting their happy face in front of the public.
The idiot's rating may be down, but I think it's astounding that 29% or whatever still support this guy. Why? They like him! They think he's one of them - a regular guy!
Of course nothing could be further from the truth but the PR is very effective.
People, en masse, just don't like to think. It's too difficult. They would rather throw their support to "our president" and forget about the rest.
It is an awesome responsibility to be an American and to understand and participate in the national debate. And that responsibility is just too much for many folks.

3. And it's probably hopeless at this point. Read 'Dark Ages America' to
better understand how we became the nation of the ignorant and the uncaring.

4. good observations but dems could tell
A lot of truths that would be very popular and don't for fear of scaring off business donors.
