Ann Coulter cries for fascism

Dear Editors,

I write with disgust in response to Ann Coulter’s editorial, “Conservatives need 12-step program to manhood”, published on May 15th in The Lawton Constitution, I ask that the editorial staff provide a policy on not promoting hate speech or whatever policy you may have that prohibits you from publishing threats or hate. If you read her editorial, you will note that she calls for the assault on a Yale student, “Why hasn’t the former spokesman for the Taliban matriculating at Yale been beaten even more senselessly than he already is?” Then, she continues to call forward conservative men to action by asking, “Where are the skinheads when you need them?” If your newspaper is going to sit back and publish this kind of fascist hatred, and then I wonder what kind of humans you really are let alone journalists with any sense of decency. If you do have any sense of decency left, you need to take action.

My recommendation is drop Coulter’s syndicated column and replace it with something within the boundaries of acceptable human behavior.

You can add the following column to the Lawton Constitution. As a subscriber, I think everyone would benefit from this free column sponsored by the Poet Laureate of the US. The column would also be cultural as well as educational.

I can't for the life of me figure out why liberal free speech is so easily attacked, but Annthrax can post whatever hateful incitations to riot and kill and everybody just kind of shrugs "free speech" and writes her off as the moonbat wacko that we all know that she is. That is, until some skinheads take her advice and actually do kill some middle-eastern student somewhere. This wacko needs to be somehow held accountable for her hate-speech - or at least, as you suggest, STOP PUBLISHING HER BILE!! I can't believe any reputable organization would publish her vile rantings.

12. Free speech versus threats

This was tough for me. I support free speech and dissent as much as any good ACLU member should. However, these remarks she made are one goose step short of calling for a Crystal Night against liberals.

That same newspaper quickly dropped COL Hackworth's syndicated article years ago when the good colonel criticized the local leadership at Fort Sill.

If the advertisers see that associating with skinheads is not good for business, then some choices will have to be made.

Kudos for writing to the paper. You stood on principle, and that's good.

The best response to Ann Coulter is not to out-coulter her by calling her a fascist (though she does act like one) and attacking her. That may be what gives you the most satisfaction at the time, but it only feeds her hatred.

Coulter expects a vitriolic response. That's why I say it feeds her - she wants to piss us liberals off so that she can catch us saying something we might regret later. She says as much in one of her books - "when the other side is pissed off, you've won the argument" (paraphrased).

No, what you want to do is respond calmly, rationally and logically to her rants. That does several things:
1. It (possibly) disarms her
2. It denies her the vitriolic response she was expecting (and likely hoping for)
3. It makes her look like the wacko, not the liberal. People will be watching the whole thing play out (if this happens on TV) and say, "Gee... that liberal debating with Coulter is producing logical, rational arguments and she's attakcing him mercilessly. What a wingnut!"

I think that any of us could probably win an argument against Ann Coulter on substance alone. But responding to her rationally, calmly and logically helps a lot.

My biggest fear at the height of Bush's popularity was that Rush, O'Reilly, or Ann would intentionally push the freepers over the edge into Rwanda-like violence. This comes pretty close, but when they gather their torches and pitchforks and discover that only a half dozen Homer Simpson clones show up, they'll run their asses home.

Some of the posters here seem to think that Ann Coulter is harmless, but I think they fail to realize how many people in areas like Lawton read her column with sick glee. There is little doubt in my mind that under the right circumstances, they could be incited to commit acts of very bloody violence. Do we wait until she is successful and Americans have been moved from their good sense to harm other Americans, or do we muzzle the bitch now? I am all for free speech, but Coulter crosses the line, and she ought to be censured in some manner or another.

It is reprehensible that the Lawton Constitution would continue to print her dribble. After all this is not the first time that the beastly Ann has crossed the line. There is such a thing as free speech, as some will no doubt point out; however, aren't journalist -- and I well know Ann Coulter is hardly that -- held to a higher level of expectation? I mean, this honestly sounds like something that would come from the leaky hate-filled pen of some backwoods in-breed racist pig. It is hardly the stuff a graduate of no less than Columbia University should be dolling out.

Good job calling the Lawton Constitution to the matt, rickrok. Now let's just hope that they actually listen to what you have to say and put something of a more pleasant and useful nature in the local paper; however, I would advise that you not hold your breath! Keep up the good work.

31. My Letter was Published Today

I want everyone to know that my letter was published in the Lawton Consitution today. I want to thank Joey Liberal and Stand ad Fight from DU for the supportive emails. I also had a few known conservatives in my work place admit to me that Coulter went too far with her skinhead remark. Quite a few of them are embarassed by her and feel that she is hurting the conservative viewpoint.

We will see if anyone posts a reply tomorrow. Finally, none of the advertisers or the editors contacted me.
