Underdog pursuing Senate seat
Admitting that his campaign for Democratic nomination so far is best known for his opposition to the war in Iraq, Carl Sheeler looks to broaden his appeal.

PROVIDENCE -- Carl Sheeler is known, he says somewhat ruefully, as "the guy with the billboard."
The billboard was the one his U.S. Senate campaign purchased over Route 95 approaching Providence that stated, "Be Patriotic: Impeach Bush."
"It is a mixed blessing. It really helped get my campaign noticed," says Sheeler. "But I don't want to be known just as the guy with the billboard or as a one-issue candidate."
Sheeler, a Marine veteran of the Persian Gulf war, a business consultant and former Republican, is perhaps the most unusual candidate running for the U.S. Senate in Rhode Island this year. So far, he is the only one -- with the exception of perennial candidate Christopher Young -- who has never been elected to political office.
