http://www.altruvista.net/pn/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=17&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0 Americans should be flocking to London this week. For the four days of their President’s visit, it should be the safest place for them to be.
14,000 London Bobbies will be on the streets to give them the warm glow of security that they crave. There will be a few misguided protesters on the streets too, but they simply don’t understand the American need to be understood. No matter, London’s police force will ensure that the divide will not be bridged while George W is challenging the sartorial expectations of a visit to the Palace by wearing tails with his cowboy boots.
Sadly, many thousands of Brits intend to demonstrate against the publicity loving President, when they could be paying him a far greater insult by ignoring him. Staying away, and demonstrating complete indifference would give the cameras nothing to show. The absurdity of Bush’s wagon train passing through streets lined only with policemen would be a sight for sore right-wing eyes.
The Bush visit may just be the camel that breaks the British public’s back. The $9 million cost of security for this macabre pantomime is being paid for by British taxpayers to honour the man that has already cost them endless millions, fighting an unholy war which Britons did not want to engage in. Now poor Lillibet is forced to dust off the best china and pretend he is a welcome guest, when in reality he is about as welcome as rats in a plague. There is something deeply sinister about the Bush n Blair style of self-defining democracy which has brought us to this. Fighting for freedom is their slogan. Fighting for the freedom to do what they want us (to do is) what they mean.
Despite being cosseted within the protective embrace of a 700 strong personal entourage, the world’s most powerful man still feels insecure. No riding around in an open carriage, waving to the crowds for this man of the people. In fact, no contact with the people and no riding in any carriages at all. He has no intention of setting foot in anything that is not bomb proof. And he still intends to wear a bullet-proof vest throughout. ...
Is it true that the chimp is wearing a bullet-proof vest!
What a difference a mere three years make -- remember when our President could travel and receive large and enthusiastic crowds? In fact, Clinton still a great welcome wherever he goes. When is this nightmare going to end?
