Terrorist provocation

(snip)

Israel has been subjected to acts of war -- hostage taking, rocket attacks and armed raids into its own territory -- carried out by extremists who have the aid of two of the world's most notorious state enablers of terrorism: Syria and Iran.

Those who have clucked about a "disproportionate" Israeli response might ask themselves what government anywhere would accept such murderous provocations without delivering a powerful response.

None of this makes the deaths of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese civilians any less tragic. Nor does it relieve Israel of the responsibility of bearing in mind that even legitimate military confrontations can quickly slip beyond control and require rigorous forethought.

But it does mean that any international effort to resolve the crisis must keep the heat on the perpetrators: the terrorists and the Syrian and Iranian governments.
