Is It Time For A Third World War?
by Danny Schechter

There are screws loose in high places.

Elements of the intelligence "community" which has done such a fine job in Iraq, and its Israeli counterpart along with the cadre of is paid and unpaid cheerleaders in the TV punditocracy seem to have decided that what the world needs now is another world war.

And they are not shy about saying so.

First, last week, the Tel Aviv correspondent for the New York Sun, a mouthpiece for the Israeli hardliners compared the kidnapping of a corporal in Gaza to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Saravejo, the incident that triggered World War 1.

The parallel was planted.

Next, on Sunday June 16, New Gingrich, former House Speaker and still a darling of the GOP right, stated matter of factly on Meet that Press that a new war is already underway in the Middle East. It is, he insists, already a world war. "THIS IS, IN FACT, WORLD WAR 3," he said for emphasis, with no regrets and a longing to "bring it on."

Columnist Dave Postman elaborated on this message in his Seattle Times blog:

'Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says America is in World War III and President Bush should say so. In an interview in Bellevue this morning Gingrich said Bush should call a joint session of Congress the first week of September and talk about global military conflicts in much starker terms than have been heard from the president. "We need to have the militancy that says 'We're not going to lose a city,' " Gingrich said. He talks about the need to recognize World War III as important for military strategy and political strategy. "Gingrich said he is "very worried" about Republicans facing fall elections and says the party must have the "nerve" to nationalize the elections and make the 2006 campaigns about a liberal Democratic agenda rather than about President Bush's record."

Mmm, a world war to save the Bush Administration? How convenient.

But there is more. The always aggressive and often obnoxious Prince of Darkness, Richard Perle, a leading booster of war on Iraq is now lobbying the Administration to finish off the "axis of evil." In print pieces and TV appearances, he is calling for a wider war now.

Also on Meet The Press, Martin Fletcher, the NBC veteran Israel correspondent revealed that the Israeli war plan that is now being carried out is premeditated and has been FIVE years in the making. It was a plan just looking for a pretext.

2. The Three GOP Stooges Would LOVE The Excuse of WWIII
but that would be putting even more lipstick on this pig. Since nobody needs Israel to exist--truly--except for Zionists and the worst sort of Xtian Fundies, and Jews as a culture have thousands of years of living in exile to draw upon, a mass evactuation is not only feasible, but probably inevitable and preferable to any other possible outcome.

3. Kicking.
I wish people would read this article, because it brings up many valid points.

Israel's reaction is so out of proportion, so over-the-top, there has to be more to it than meets
the eye. It's so hard to believe the reactions - or non-reactions - of world leaders. At first
I was inclined just to blame Bush, knowing he's too stupid to truly understand the issues anyway.
But the other European leaders are pussy-footing around the issue as well, and it's frightening.

What chance now of Iran backing down on its nuclear ambitions? Not a snowball's chance in hell.
What chance of support for Al Q'aeda drying up? Zero. And the most likely short-term reaction
will surely be another terror attack on another country, Germany perhaps, now that they're playing
footsie with the US again, or perhaps it will be Australia's turn next.

How long do they want us all to go on living with this fear of attack? And how long are we going
to let it detract from the real issue of global warming, which is likely to wipe us all out
eventually anyway?

I don't think I've ever felt to helpless in the face of political skullduggery as I do now. We are
all just pawns - but do our leaders really have any idea of where they're taking us?

5. How About Civil War: The Conclusion?
That way we'd only be inflicting our madness upon ourselves, and maybe finally resolve the war between the states.

7. I want these fucking neocon cowards on the front lines.
I am so sick of these chickenhawks frothing at the mouth while they remain totally out of harm's way. THEY NEED TO BE THE FIRST drafted. Period.
