The 2008 Campaign - Where's Edwards? (no link)
Marc Ambinder
National Journal
07-22-2006

...... Since selling his Washington home and moving back to North Carolina to start a university center devoted to the working poor, the former one-term senator has rarely given interviews. He no longer contributes money to other Democrats, although he raises money for them. He has kept his political action vehicle, the One America Committee, but it's virtually bankrupt. And he hasn't asked his financial supporters to contribute. Opponents whisper that Edwards's trial lawyer base, which powered his 2004 presidential bid, has been pecked to death by voracious rivals. And then there's the labor thing: Edwards spends lots of time with unions -- days at a time, even -- as they battle to raise state minimum wages. "He's running Dick Gephardt's '04 campaign," one strategist to a rival sneers dismissively. Perhaps most bewildering to some inside-the-Beltway Democrats is that Edwards doesn't seem to care whether they think he's making all the wrong moves. ..... And now, while Clinton appears at press conferences with AFL-CIO officials and speaks at union legislative sessions in Washington, Edwards spends days in the trenches with unskilled or semiskilled laborers. He's a leader of the union effort to raise hotel workers' wages. He has also campaigned in eight states for minimum-wage increases. His spadework sends the message that Edwards doesn't mind getting his hands dirty toiling on behalf of Americans living at the grassroots.

10. Not lazy or stupid, just primarily interested in remaining employed.
Don't forget that most of the reporters work for the very same corporations that have supported the corporate take-over of washington and those corporations do not take kindly to any employees that bring attention to their nefarious dealings.

3. The June 2008 preference poll by the Des Moines REGISTER listed
Edwards first.

Ahead of New York's junior senator.

Ahead of everybody.

He seems to be doin' ok.

5. Hi, Rowdyboy. Yep. Edwards put Elizabeth's health first, and
when it was clear that she was going to be ok, his schedule picked up.

She seems to be behind him, and while Edwards has his own strengths and virtues, I think she more than doubles them.

They're a compelling duo.

6.  They're a compelling couple....

She rounds out the picture for Edwards very nicely, as does Gert Clark as a stand-in for Wes. Both offer quality couples that would grace the White House and I can't wait to actually have a "President" again!.

7. Wes and Gert would be dynamite, too. I just think our whole line-up
beats the crap out of the Republicans.

And you said a mouthful there -- about having a real president.

I'm countin' down the months...

9. Well, on a blog like this one people of like mind can bump into
each other, and it helps a lot.

Dubya has a lot of powerful buttons he can push, true. But compared to where he was just a year or so ago, he's way down. The public doesn't support his war, and the war's going horribly, and gas prices are out of reach, and the health care system hasn't improved, social security is a mess, Israel is shelling Lebanon into smoking rubble, the stock market's wobbly, our allies generally think Bush is an idiot except for those at the G8 summit -- and they KNOW he's an idiot, and most Americans think stem cell research is worth a look and Dubya vetoes it in another anti-science maneuver.

It's going to be hard for him to shove anything through the Congress, especially if there are big Dem gains in November.

I agree with you that it's always bad to have an idiot in power like this, but the public generally is finally getting the message.

And meanwhile, I'm glad to bump into other liberals on these boards, and that includes you.

11. I'm just so thrilled that the repukes are finally waking up to the fact
that the idiot frat boy doesn't, and has never, given a shit about the party or their phony-baloney positions. He has done what he was sent to do and they can all go take a flying fuck, for all he cares.

12. Yep. It took 'em a long time but there is a persistent feeling now
that Dubya is damaged goods.

And damaged by self-inflicted wounds.

Worst president ever? Definitely a strong contender.
