John Dean knocks ‘imperial presidency’
Watergate whistle-blower asks if U.S. ‘is on the road to fascism' in book

LOS ANGELES - John Dean, the White House lawyer who famously helped blow the whistle on the Watergate scandal that drove Richard Nixon from office, says the country has returned to an "imperial presidency" that is putting the United States and the world at risk.

In his new book, "Conservatives Without Conscience," Dean looks at Republican-controlled Washington and sees a bullying, manipulative, prejudiced leadership edging the nation toward a dark era.

"Are we on the road to fascism?" he writes. "Clearly, we are not on that road yet. But it would not take much more misguided authoritarian leadership, or thoughtless following of such leaders, to find ourselves there.

"I am not sure which is more frightening," he adds, "another major terror attack or the response of authoritarian conservatives to that attack."

2. Great Book - And scary
I'm listening to the audio version and am about halfway through. After I'm done I'm going to have to spend a couple of nights making notes from the hardback at the bookstore.

7. And being the worlds military power house makes it more so.
I do not know why people are not up in arms all over the place. I can only thing they do not care or like that path.

8. Military Power House & Corporate Media
When a country has the kind of corporate rightwing media as we
do, its difficult to properly inform and educate the public.
There are alot of Americans out there who get what they think
is "news" from FOX and talk radio, like that insane
Limbaugh. I think people would care more if they were better
informed and educated. The rightwingers and Bush Regime don't
want it that way. Far from it! Fear and ignorance suits
their evil, long standing agenda. As more scandals break
every week regarding the Republicans, more Americans will wake
up and catch up to the informed thinking of rest of the world.
I honestly believe that the majority of Americans don't want
Fascism. C of B

5. This IS a very good book. I don't know how you fix these people though
The followers are born of fear and insecurity and in a complex world their fear must grow exponentially. Conservatives will simply replace Bush and Company with another group of thugs and they will be led about by the nose all over again. They aren't capable of independent, rational thought.

Great listening so far, backs up what us "leftys" have assumed for years (I just didn't know that "swiftboating" started in 1991 towards John & Maureen Dean).

If he says in book that some of the CWC are scary, you better believe I think so too!

:scared:
