Editor, Times-Dispatch: In response to the letter, "Homosexual Agenda Spreads Across Nation":
No California legislation requires the promotion of homosexuality. There is legislation against gender discrimination. Only one school district out of 1,056 refused to adopt the language of this anti-discrimination law and thus jeopardized two-thirds of its budget. There is a drive on to recall the three right-wing board members most responsible for this fiasco.
Yes, a survey was distributed at a single Wisconsin high school. It was part of a student-led day of action to counteract harassment. The letter-writer was outraged at questions such as, "If you have never slept with someone of your same gender, then how do you know you wouldn't prefer it?" and "What do you think caused your heterosexuality?" The point was that gays and lesbians are often expected to put up with outrageous questions just like these every day.
New York City does not mandate HIV/AIDS education in kindergarten. Beginning in fourth grade students are instructed in how the disease is transmitted and how to prevent it -- but homosexuals are not responsible for the sad state of affairs that led school administrators to find this necessary.
Yes, a Massachusetts school teacher read a book aloud in which a king marries another king. But the Lexington School Committee is an elected board in a state that recognizes same-sex unions. Its inclusive curriculum reflects a pluralistic society.
Where the writer sees a homosexual agenda, I see free people in a free country working to secure equal rights.
The writer also didn't tell us that the so-called marriage amendment goes way beyond its intended target. It denies legal recognition to all unmarried relationships, not just same-sex relationships -- affecting domestic violence laws, child custody, property arrangements, and anything else that looks like marriage.
Virginians should vote no on the marriage amendment in November. Julia Hebner. richmond.
