THE PRESIDENT: Mrs. Williams has invited myself and the Mayor and the Governor and Congressman into her home which had been wiped out by the storm....But the amazing thing that's happened in her home is that there are people from across the country here who are helping to rebuild it....We've got a strategy to help the good folks down here rebuild. Part of it has to do with funding; part of it has to do with housing; and a lot of it has to do with encouraging volunteers from around the United States to come down and help people like Ms. Williams....So we're proud to be here with you, Ms. Williams, and God bless you.

MRS. WILLIAMS: I'm proud to be here, Mr. President. And I won't ever forget you.

But since that day, not much has happened. Williams' house has stood gutted, just as it was when the president left.

Mrs. Williams has been living with her daughter in a part of the city across the Mississippi River.

"I thought I'd be in my house by now," Williams said recently.

Williams did get some initial help from FEMA. And the White House says she's in line to get federal rebuilding money that will be allocated by the state. But that may take a while.

Williams says her memory of the day is a blur, but she feels the president left a different impression -- that her house could be totally rebuilt within a few months.

"Unfortunately, the rest of the New Orleans hasn’t fared much better. A recent report from the Brookings Institution found that rent prices have sharply increased over the past year, while unemployment rates remain higher than pre-Katrina levels. Crime levels are also up in certain districts, and 60% of houses and businesses are not receiving electricity. New Orleans’s current population is only at around half its pre-Katrina level."

1. Bush's approval rating among African-Americans is 2%
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 07:13 AM by IanDB1
His approval rating among African-American Katrina Survivors must be something like the dumbest 0.0002%.

Those are the people for whom the hair dryer manufacturers had to add the warning, "Do not use in shower."

Look at that dingbat.

She doesn't exactly radiate an air of intelligence.

I bet she's still thrilled that Bush is pro-family.

Stupid fucker.

I want to call that dumbfuck and say, "I told you so!"

3. That's a little harsh. She didn't even vote for him.
If my world was torn apart and someone powerful showed up with implied promises, I'd be grateful too. She's a rube and I'm sorry she fell for his line.

6. Yeah, it did sound a little harsh. But then again, this woman
trusted a proven and notorious liar, thief, and coward.

Did she really expect anything other than what she got? If so, well...

9. You're right. Maybe it was a bit harsh...
But if it were me, and I had Bush in my house after he drowned my city, with television cameras and press all around, I wouldn't be dancing around and hugging him.

I would have given him a piece of my mind.

"You're damn right, you're going to rebuild my house, asshole! You're the one that drowned my city!"

2. "We've got a strategy?"
Ya got michael brown in your pocket bush? You don't have a strategy for anything except a desperate pass of the baton in January 2009 to anybody.

Those living in the ninth ward are now asking for the national guard to assist in gutting their homes before the 29 August deadline, whereupon the city will start bulldozing.

No doubt Mrs Williams will never forget you george. Neither will I.

4. Taxpayer money for that photo-op would have rebuilt how many homes?
Sorry, Mrs. Williams, you've been had. It's all stagecrafting, a dog-and-pony show conducted by Rove.

7. Pretty sad and incompetent when the POTUS can't even follow through
on a personal promise. I mean, how tough would it have been to say to an aid..."make it happen"?
