Australia:General slams recruitment strategy
THE Government's plan to lower the bar for armed service recruitment could potentially put lives at risk, a former Australian army general has warned.

The Government yesterday announced the army would recruit 2600 extra soldiers under an 11-year, $10 billion plan designed to prepare the defence force to intervene in more failing states in an increasingly unstable region.

To attract extra recruits, it may relax bans on people with weight problems, asthma, tattoos and on former drug users.

Major General Alan Stretton, a former Australian of the Year, said the plan could compromise the integrity of the armed forces.
