Ripping the spineless Democrats on torture
http://local.lancasteronline.com/4/26093

...Democrats, of course, have been demonstrating their impotence by sitting meekly on the sidelines. But maybe, you know, as Congress goes about passing the bill, Democrats will stand up, impassioned, for what at one time I thought were American values: We don’t torture, period, and only totalitarian regimes do “secret” trials.

But I’m sure that in their desperation to seem Tough on Terror Too, they’ll remain as mild and irrelevant as Republicans say they are.

1. It is W who pushed this legislation
through a GOP majority.

3. to use in Nov as an election issue?
Perhaps the political ends may justify the means...but I am hardly comfortable, and this issue is a long way from going away. If the dems is congress cannot stand up, and if they remain a minority, it is just one more disgraceful episode of weak silence.

For the moment I can only profess a bottomless disappointment.

5. This is not what I meant
I view the democratic response as being defensive as they are not the majority, and pretty much everything they vote against the * admin is taken as being "with the terrorists".

I thought that your post observing that * was pushing this legislature was an acknowledgement to our Dems that they have a rough road to hoe.

7. I see your point
and don't pretend to first hand knowledge as to how difficult, costly, or possible any blocking of this bill would have been. Disappointment remains, however.

I would have like to see someone such as Reed in the 1890's, who forcefully and eloquently staked his substantial career against the US imperialist tendencies of the time. He lost, and retired, but at least put his voice and his whole person into what he believed was right at that turning point in history. This to me seems a similar turning point, or a continuation of the downward spiral.

4. Irrelevance is right
and until the DINO's no longer run the party- that's where the Democrats will remain.
