Torture: From A Two-Time Bush Voter and Fundamentalist Christian.
My mom has come a long way in the past 6 years. Hell, just in the past 2 years, as she was a complete Bush supporter until just recently. She used to think Bush was a man of God. She's starting to come around after searching the internet trying to discount the stuff my sister and I have been telling her for the last several years. She, in turn, is passing the information she's finding off to her fundie friends, who have gotten so angry with her they wouldn't speak to her for awhile, until they, too found out what she was telling them was true. They still have their head in the sand a bit as they're claiming now they really didn't support Bush (They LOVED the guy!). She's also down on Pat Robertson after over 20 years of supporting him and sending him money because she finally realized what my sister and I had been telling her about Charles Taylor, etc. was true. After I emailed her this article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/25/opinion/25rieckhoff.html

She responded with this:

"Very, very good article. To me, no need for argument or compromise or discussion or amendment or vote, bottom line is WE DON'T TORTURE, period!!!! If we don't get that message now when those in Iraq (and around the world) are seeing with their own eyes human bodies every day being dumped on the streets like trash with the heinous stigma of grotesque abuse and misuse, (to put in mildest terms), if we cannot see the degradation and hellishness of complete disregard for the sanctity of human life and the human body, then we are in very serious trouble and the meaning of America is being undermined and betrayed--it is high treason as far as I am concerned and it is the very high standard and the very sanctity of individuals right to exist in freedom and respect that has made America the great country she is that is being challenged right now. We cannot drop this standard, we just cannot!!!

Yeah, I too, am very passionate about this."

She still can't believe Bush is as bad as I tell her he is, but in 6 years she's gone from Bush lover and supporter to being very upset at what she's seeing, especially with the Iraq War she once supported, and with this administration's policies. She's 65 and has changed more than I have (I've always detested Bush). I have to give her props and my respect for even taking the time to find out the truth for herself. That's the only way I'd want her to get the truth, anyway.

4. She really is, but fundamentalism is tantamount to meth...
on what it does to the brain, and believe me, it has almost snuffed out any intelligence she once had. I am really happy to see that she's clawing her way out of the haze.

3. FANTASTIC FANTASTIC FANTASTIC
Clinton's staged tiff with Faux is nothing compared to what you've done! I'm a tough guy, and an inveterate cynic - but your entry almost brought a tear to my eye.

You did it with facts, not with sweeping soliloquies - we should all take a lesson from this. Your mom and her friends are also brave people - very few people are able to change their mind, even in the face of strong evidence.

I hope that this makes the front page!

Thank you, and good luck!

6. My mom is very persistant...
and I think she is one of the few people who can turn other fundies to the light, so to speak. Believe me, I'm thrilled that she's coming around. I've seen Fundamentalist Christianity turn a kind, compassionate, intelligent human being into a suspicious, judgemental, bigot. She was also anti-Gay (They need to be healed straight by Jesus), but surprisingly, she's even coming around on that.

7. She would vote for Hillary.
My mom likes Hillary and thinks we need a woman president. If Hillary ran, she would probably get a lot of right wing women's votes, if my mom is any indicator.
