Miami, FL (AHN) - The publisher of the Miami Herald, Jesus Diaz Jr., has resigned following a scandal where newspaper journalists were paid by the U.S. government to use their articles to help topple the Castro regime in Cuba.
Diaz, who was the publisher and president of the Miami Herald Media Company since July 2005, explains in a letter to readers that he felt in some way responsible for the "breach of widely accepted principles of journalistic ethics."
"Our policies prohibiting such behavior may have been ambiguously communicated, inconsistently applied and widely misunderstood over many years in {the Miami Herald's Spanish-language sister publication} the El Nuevo Herald newsroom."
Diaz adds, "I realize and regret that the events of the past three weeks have created an environment that no longer allows me to lead our newspapers in a manner most beneficial for our newspapers, our readers and our community."
