Coast Guard Target Practice on the Great Lakes?
Kucinich Calls for Full NEPA Review

Oct 24, 2006

The US Coast Guard has proposed setting up 34 safety zones on the Great Lakes for training and testing with live ammunition, according to OurLakes.org.

On Monday Congressman Kucinich called for a full environmental review of the plan under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1970 (NEPA). In his statement, Comments for the U.S. Coast Guard, Kucinich said, "The August 1 Federal Register notice does not, and cannot, adequately address the environmental consequences until a full NEPA review is done."

OurLakes.org states, "Live weapons testing could heavily impact the already fragile ecosystem of the Great Lakes, and would require changes to current laws against vessels carrying live ammunition on the Great Lakes."

Public hearings on the proposal are being held around the Great Lakes region. The meeting in Cleveland was Monday evening, but you can still submit comments through November 13.

1. Let's see...
dump lead into the largest body(s) of fresh water on the planet. Bad idea.

There are ways to simulate live fire.

Stupid Idea.

2. Not that this is a good idea, but
one wonders what is already at the bottom, as the lakes were used for aircraft carrier pilot training during WWII on two training carriers. One suspects that there was a bit of live fire practice as well.

3. There are plenty of heavy metals to go around.
At this time there is no "need" great enough to add polution to the Great Lakes. You are correct there is lots of nasty stuff in the great lakes.
