The military just asked us to vote democratic
On monday, the day before the election all four of the military's newspapers will print the same editorial. It will be published in the Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times and Marine Corps Times.

The title of the editorial is:

TIME FOR RUMSFELD TO GO

"So long as our government requires the backing of an aroused and informed public opinion ... it is necessary to tell the hard bruising truth."

That statement was written by Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent Marguerite Higgins more than a half-century ago during the Korean War.

But until recently, the "hard bruising" truth about the Iraq war has been difficult to come by from leaders in Washington. One rosy reassurance after another has been handed down by President Bush, Vice President Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld: "mission accomplished," the insurgency is "in its last throes," and "back off," we know what we're doing, are a few choice examples.

snip

Read the entire piece.

The can't officialy endorse a party, but this comes pretty close.

Both Bush and Cheney have said that Rumsfeld isn't leaving, so it's going to take a Democratic majority to get some accountability.

Support our Troops: Vote Democratic.

3. I`ll be interested to hear
the White House response once this story hits the mainstream press. Will we hear:

"aiding the enemy"
"cut and run"
"soft on terror"

If this story doesn`t wake up the voters, nothing will.

That's good to know. After all, they are the ones whose life is in danger. No sufficient support, no sufficient body armor, lacking armors for some of their vehicles and all they hear from those who sent them there is how great it is in Iraq.

I hope these papers have enough influence to have an impact on the election.

7. This probably leaked out because
they are afraid the Pentagon would stop the publishing of the papers on Monday.

A preemptive publishing, if you will!

Is this a smart strategery? Why yes, I think it is!

11. The Pentagon doesn't publish them.
They're published by Gannett Publishing Group. The most the Circus could do is banned them from the installations and order the PR units not to talk. That will just piss off the career force and they'll back channel the info to the Times. It's way too late to shoot the messenger.

9. What was the Bush quote? "I'm keeping Cheney and Rummy..."
"because they are doing a fantastic job!"
Or something like that? What exactly did he say?

12. The new Dem majority's first act must be to ax Rummy
I don't care if its a vote of no confidence, censure, or impeachment. The military and 75% of the American people are demanding his head. Democrats have to show that they are capable of getting something substantial done. Getting Rummy axed is both symbolic and substantial.

13. Uh, these newspapers are privately owned. They serve military audiences so
have some interest in staying in touch with troop opinions etc but an editorial calling for Rumsfeld's removal isn't any official military view.

Of course, Rumsfield is a disaster and should go, and the editorial appearing now means the publisher considers it a relatively safe opinion for the target audience ...
