http://billpress.com/columns.htmlIntolerance! It’s raising its ugly head again. And, once again, intolerance comes from the religious right. This time, a conservative Jew: radio talk show host Dennis Prager.
Has Prager ever read the Constitution? Does he know anything about American history? For Prager and fellow ignoramuses, a little refreshment course might come in handy.
This is the United States of America. We are a secular nation. We have no official state religion. We require no religious test for public office. In fact, the practice of putting your hand on the Bible, or any other book, is not called for in the Constitution. It began with George Washington, who also added the words “So help me, God” at the end of the official oath. No subsequent office-holder has dared not follow Washington’s example — until now.
Prager’s also wrong in calling the Bible “America’s sacred book.” The fact is, we have only one sacred book. It’s not the Bible. It’s not the Koran, either. It’s the Constitution. And, under the freedom of religion guaranteed by the First Amendment of the Constitution, we Americans are free to practice whatever religion we want, or to practice no faith at all.
